Planning & Hosting Math Game Nights
Planning & Hosting Fun & Engaging Family Math Game Nights
This workshop by the award winning authors Jane and John Felling from Box Cars and One-Eyed Jacks will focus on providing teachers, administrators and math coaches with the skills, knowledge, and expertise to plan and host three types of family math games events. Ideas for collaborating with parent associations, advertising and getting community buy-in, selecting themes, learning different organizational formats will be shared. Participants will leave with extensive planning tools and three math games outlines for hosting a math games event using playing cards, another for dice, and a third for dominoes. The games will focus on the topics parents typically request and will include elementary fact fluency, operations and place value concepts games. Participants will walk through and play the games so that they are ready to host an event. Participants will also receive an extensive handout containing planning documents, most games, manipulatives to take away, and see samples from the hundreds of family nights we have conducted across North America. Many schools send two teachers to this training - one from primary and another from upper elementary so that they can go back to their schools and support each other in organizing events. Our goal is to have your school complete two family events during the school year. Hosting engaging family math nights provides schools an opportunity to connect with families, build parental support and develop your school community of learners. Many schools and districts are required to engage families and parents and family math events are the perfect way to support these initiatives. As well funding and grants are typically available to support such programming. Come prepared to play, and walk away with the ideas and tools to ensure success!
