  Arithmetic is crucial to teaching mathematics in the elementary classroom but what comes after that? Many teachers struggle with how to effectively build in problem solving and math content to teach math skills with mathematical thinking and understanding. Kim Sutton’s new class, Mathematics Beyond Arithmetic, for teachers K-5, will share powerful problem solving strategies in her approach to motivating students mathematically.

  Kim’s new class addresses the NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics to teach the content of number & operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis & probability. Kim will model using diagrams, looking for patterns, listing possibilities, trying special values or cases, working backward, guessing and checking, and creating a simpler problem. Kim will share her “magical” approach to developing an umbrella of patterns over the total mathematics curriculum. Kim will highlight powerful literature, songs and centers that creates the vision of a problem solving classroom!

  What You Will Learn:

  • How to solve problems that arise within mathematics and in other areas of the curriculum.
  • 10 titles of powerful children’s literature you should incorporate as tools for problem solving.
  • Management “treasures” to assist teachers in incorporating problem solving in the elementary classroom.
  • Tools for mathematical problem solving that build understanding, independence, and personal responsibility.
  • Create a bank of mathematical language and build a “Math Word Wall” that can be used for communication in problem solving situations.
  • Powerful “visual tools” to encourage constant learning from the walls of the classroom.
  • How to generate meaningful problems from classroom situations to create learning opportunities.
  • Place students into situations where they can reason and think at the highest level.

  • 9:00-9:30 a.m. Building a “Math Word Wall” to Reinforce Language Tools in Problem Solving Situations
  • 9:30-10:15 a.m. Using Songs, Dances, Stories, and Poems to Present Problem Solving Skills and Strategies.
  • 10:15-10:25 a.m. Morning Break
  • 10:25-11:20 a.m. Discovering Problem Solving in Geometry - Utilizing Mirrors and Shapes for Motivation and Meaning.
  • 11:20-12:00 p.m. Creating a Classroom that Visually Reinforces Problem Solving - Displays and Centers that Generate “Thinking” Situations.
  • 12:00-1:00 p.m. Hosted Lunch and Viewing Time.
  • 1:00-2:15 p.m. Using the Tools of Number Sense - How to Develop the Skills that should be used at the Application Level of Mathematics.
  • 2:15-3:00 p.m. Teaching Students to Analyze Data Through New Graphs and Glyphs for the Elementary Classroom - Creating a “Graph” Land in Your Room!
  • 3:00 p.m. Dismissal

  All K-5 Classroom Teachers, Elementary Math Teachers, Resource Specialists and Curriculum Co-ordinators should attend.

  ½ unit of credit from Humboldt State University is available for an additional charge.
