Science is the perfect context to help bring meaning to the mathematics students must learn. Data analysis, measurement, computational skills, and problem solving are all mathematical areas that gain meaning when used in a scientific investigation. Students frequently ask, “Why do I need to know this?” or, “So—am I ever going to use this?” This workshop for teachers K-5, is full of mathematical science that will answer this question for your students. Some of the topics this class will cover include median, mean and mode; data representation, interpretation, and computation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division); problem solving; and measurement.

This class will focus on two essential ingredients to improve achievement in measurement, which continues to be an area of low performance for all students. This class will make and use a clinometer and protractor to measure, measure, measure! Number crunching will gain relevance and become an important skill to use with calculations. You will leave this seminar with a tremendous number of ideas to make math meaningful while teaching science in your classroom.

For the reluctant learner or English Language Learner, this integrated approach provides a setting for greater language acquisition. The more students read and write, the better readers and writers they become. Science demands increased communication that generates reading and writing opportunities.

Come spend time with Barbara learning to boost your students’ math performance while teaching science!
